A fellow by the name of Jake that I met at Stumptown Comic Fest and I are collaborating on a project so amazing that there is no possibly way we can keep in only to ourselves. The project is called poketry. Essentially, Jake writes a haiku about a pokemon and I illustrate it ins pseudo sumi-e/calligraphy style.


Right now we are looking for guest artists and writers. Jake is looking for people to write a really good haiku about pikachu, the nidos and whoever else you may want to write. As for illustrators pretty much anything goes. Just either e-mail me or Jake

Oh yeeeaaaah! It’s sketch blog time. I’m a little ashamed I never thought of using this blog for sketch posting.

And for those few that actually care, Devil Bids Us Skoal is finally off hiatus. Updates will continue to be on Mondays.

There are two facts that every successful person knows: if you want to get good at something you need to do it a lot, and if you want something refined invest time beyond when you think “it’s good enough”. Of course, having the drive to do both is difficult and rare, unless it’s a challenge.

On live journal, there is a new community called art slam. Participants choose between 1,2 or 3 months of drawing a single concept of their choice. Already there are dozens of artists participating. And if a sense of accomplishment, moral support and free promotion isn’t good enough, there are even awards for various accomplishments.

Currently the community is not accepting new members, but they will be allowing new participants near the end of June or July.

I’d hardly call this product an improvement over anything.

I’d like to talk about how terrible this ad is, but can you really blame the guys? Just try to imagine a company asking you to design a video for a product that is essentially a stick to wipe yourself with. I’d give up too. “They want a logo? Quick, throw some time together ans put a daisy in it. It makes just as much sense as the product”.

The first part Devil Bids us Skoal is up for sale now. The comic is 22 pages long, black and white, and has a fancy silkscreened cover.

To me, this is my first real comic that I’ve printed. Everything else wasn’t scripted and/or put together quickly. This time, I actually scripted things and edited them! Of course, I still had to fix a few problems for the printed version, but not all that many.

Also, tomorrow is international drawing day. You do what the name implies, draw all day.

I am also going to Usteam speed coloring what I finished for that day. The stream is going to last for 90 minutes. If there is extra time, I will try my hand at digital sketches.

Surely today is a grand day. I come with not one, but two reasons why.

First, a personal victory; I passed the junior portfolio for my school. Due to budgets cuts and a high standard, my school could only allow so many people into the senior sequences. Twenty or so people didn’t make the cut for the senior sequence, and even more didn’t get into the concentrations that they wanted to. I not only passed, but was also accepted into my first pick concentration: design production. Basically, I’m going to learn how to print things as effectively as possible. Paper isn’t going anywhere fools.

Second, Adventure Time is coming to tv. Adventure Time is a short that was on Nickelodeon or something, but it gained notoriety on youtube.

For years, it has only been one short video, but, as stated, it is coming to TV. I haven’t seen any official dates, but it is coming to Cartoon Network. The creator, Pendleton Ward, is going to be at comicon. So if you’re one of those awesome people who are going to be attending, I suggest you check him out.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a Pen costume to make.

For the first time ever, I am going to stream myself coloring something digitally.

I am beginning to believe that stumptown was is the greatest thing on earth. I had such a blast at the fest! Made both friends and money, and I cannot imagine anything better than that.

I sat by the both very talented Kevin Moore and Natalie Nourigat. Visit their sites, DO IT!

Stumptown probably was my first real comic tabling. I have tabled at PDX Zine Symposium since 2007, but that’s zines and not comics (though the community is very accepting of minicomics). So here are some things I learned:
1. If you are coming from far away, don’t skimp out on bringing things for presentation. I didn’t really bring anything in an effort to conserve space, which was a huge mistake. I should have at least invested in some small and cheap, plastic stands and a table cloth.
2. Don’t pack an hour before you leave. I left so many important things behind when I left for Portland.
3. Business cards: order them two months in advance.
4. And last, but not least; when making comics REMEMBER THAT COVERS NEED TO BE NICE! Virtually none of mine were all that eye catching. Perhaps I will silkscreen some new covers…

I do have piles of comics that I read, but I’m saving all of my thoughts on them for future issues of Dinosaur vs. Robot.

I don’t think it’s too far off to say that Batman is the most popular comic book superhero in existence. Nearly everyone can recognize him despite major changes in costume and his logo over the years.

I don’t know about you, but I think the 1977 one is by far the most iconic.
